OpenAI’s GPT-4: A Powerful New Generation AI Language Model

OpenAI has released a new language model called GPT-4, which is an upgrade to its previous model, GPT-3. One of the key differences is that GPT-4 allows for input in both text and image form, and it is claimed to have “human-level performance” on academic and professional exams, such as the US bar and SAT school tests. GPT-4 is available through a paid version of ChatGPT for $20 a month.

The model has already been integrated into various apps, including language learning app Duolingo and Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Two paid subscription features for Duolingo will utilise the software, including an AI conversation partner and a tool that explains corrections to mistakes.

OpenAI has warned that care should be taken when using the outputs of GPT-4, particularly in contexts where reliability is crucial, as the model is not infallible. GPT-4 has scored in the 90th percentile on the Uniform Bar Exam, compared to ChatGPT, which scored in the 10th percentile. However, the model has encountered issues with “hallucinations,” context limits, and an inability to learn from experience.

The software will be embedded into Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, which was released earlier this year, and Microsoft is expected to integrate it further into consumer products. OpenAI has conducted stress tests to identify and mitigate possible risks of bias, disinformation, privacy, and cybersecurity.

One of the notable features of GPT-4 is its ability to describe images and provide detailed answers to image-related queries, similar to computer vision. This feature demonstrates OpenAI’s aim to compete with Google’s search engine, which includes search using images but lacks answer-giving capabilities. OpenAI has also partnered with Be My Eyes, a Danish start-up that pairs people with visual impairments with human volunteers to help guide or assist users who are blind or partially sighted.

As the three major cloud computing vendors – Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Web Services – are all investing in generative AI, the chatbot race is bringing a new facet to the global innovation battle. According to Gordon McKenna, Vice-President, Cloud Evangelist & Alliances at Ensono, “Fundamentally, the arrival of GPT-4 is an important milestone on the path to Artificial General Intelligence.” The next decade is expected to witness the exponential advancement of AI, supporting next-generation technologies that will make up the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
